Ep. 2: Let’s Get Physical with Monique Jones
I’m honored to present my first guest. My dear friend and badass Gen X’er, Monique Jones.
Monique is an attorney by day and a health and wellness coach by night. She hails from Detroit, Michigan. And after living in the DC/Maryland/Virginia (DMV) area, Chicago, and the Denver area, she now lives in Jacksonville, Florida with her two fur babies, Lola and Onyx. Monique is also a two-time Ironman, a fitness instructor, jet setter, avid gardener, and self-professed foodie.
Last year, she started her own plant-based health and wellness coaching business called Plant Power Peoples. She uses this business to spread the good news about fitness and a plant-based lifestyle to women and communities of color. Her mantra is to live your best life outside the box with grace and laughter and plenty of wine.
During this conversation, Monique shares her fitness journey and the impact of societal and cultural messaging on body image growing up. She talks about the importance of nutrition and fitness in communities of color, particularly in food deserts, and shares her motivation for working with women in these communities to help them find a healthier lifestyle.
We get into the importance of finding enjoyment in physical activities, embracing variety in fitness routines, and the importance of prioritizing self-care. We also delve into the benefits of transitioning to a plant-based lifestyle, the misconceptions around it, and navigating family reactions to this lifestyle change.
Monique highlights the need to question cultural food norms and shares her plans to spread the message of plant-based living through speaking engagements and fitness instruction.
My biggest takeaways from this conversation were the importance of taking small steps to make incremental changes, to both prioritize yourself and move toward a healthier lifestyle.
Monique's story is a testament to the power of self-acceptance and finding joy in physical activity.
