Ep. 8: Parental Loss Unplugged (Part 1):  10 Ways I Began Healing My Grief with Michele Walter

One of the things that I have learned about grieving the loss of a parent is that there is such an identity shift that comes along with that oftentimes . . . . And so when the parent is gone . . . what does that mean for who we are?

This month marks the start of a special series to address the journey that so many Gen X’ers find ourselves on–losing our parents.  In Part 1, Michele, discusses her personal experience of losing her mom, Patty, on May 25, 2012, from a sudden heart attack at the young age of 58.

Michele shares some of her fondest memories of her mom and how her mom was her biggest champion.  And when her biggest champion was gone, without warning, Michele found herself feeling untethered and unequipped to adequately process that grief.  Over the next 12 years, Michele slowly brought herself back to life and is now sharing 10 ways that she’s healing that grief.

Michele emphasizes that your grief is your own personal journey, and one for which no one else has any business dictating timeframes or parameters.  Michele ends the episode by sharing a poem that her mom wrote, which Michele entitled Patty’s rainbow.

If you’re a Gen X’er who has lost one or both of your parents, this episode will remind you that you’re not alone and that you can find ways to heal through your grief.
